After 17 years of living in Sacramento, I moved back to Oakland a month ago. I cannot tell you how thrilled I am to be here. My hometown is certainly undergoing a renaissance, but it still feels like home.
All of the recent movies about Oakland (Blindspotting, Sorry to Bother You, even Black Panther) feel like lovely, "Welcome Home!" gifts just for me. It warms my heart to recognize streets and stores and freeways and landmarks and restaurants while I'm relaxing like a queen at the Grand Lake Theatre.
Blindspotting is a special gift that covers a lot: racism, gentrification, friendship, growing up, police brutality, and more.
Oh, and there are some Black people in it.
Go see it.
